First Video Footage Of The New Android Market

Good news for Android developers: Google has just posted a video of the upcoming refresh for its Android Market, the online store that allows users to download new software to their Android phones. And the changes are very promising.

According to the understated Android blog post, developers will be able to include screenshots, promotional icons, and descriptions for their applications. The UI for the store, which we caught a glimpse of in some leaked photos earlier this week, is also much more polished and user friendly. In other words, the store will now more closely resemble the iPhone’s App Store, which is not a bad thing…..Full Story

Breaking News: No new app submissions unless they run on OS 3.0

iphone3giPhone OS 3.0 beta 5 was only released for general consumption yesterday, and already Apple is rocking our collective faces off with big news. While a cool new feature being uncovered would be great, what Apple has in store for would-be iPhone application submitters is a bit more challenging.

Effective today, Apple will no longer be accepting any iPhone or iPod touch applications that are not compatible with iPhone OS 3.0. According to an email sent to developers, Full Story…

Apple’s 64-Bit ‘Snow Leopard’ OS Boots 32-Bit Kernel By Default

Thinking of upgrading your Mac to ‘Snow Leopard?’ At just $29 to upgrade from OS X 10.5, the answer to that is probably “yes” if you own an Apple machine. Generally speaking, early reviews have shown that the operating system is a worthy upgrade, and while it’s certainly nothing revolutionary, it does offer up enough new functionality to justify the small asking price.

But not all is peachy in the world of Snow Leopard. Early testers have discovered a strange quirk within the OS that casts some doubt on just how “64-bit” the “64-bit OS” really is. While the ins and outs of the story are quite complex, the gist of it is this: Apple’s OS X 10.6 boots with a 32-bit kernel by default, despite the fact that the OS can and does run 64-bit applications. Weird, right? Oh, but Snow Leopard Server boots the 64-bit kernel by default. Still with us? Good.

Apple Telling Developers to Remove “Free Memory” Function from App Store iPhone Apps?

Posted on Friday, August 28, 2009 by Rene Ritchie
Apple is now telling developers to remove the “Free Memory” function — the ability to clear data from RAM without force quitting or rebooting — from their iPhone (and iPod touch) applications or those applications will be removed from the App Store.

Bjango, who makes iStat [$1.99 on sale - iTunes link] had to do just that for their latest version:

Stat’s Free Memory function was removed at Apple’s request. This decision was completely out of our hands. Please note that all other apps with Free Memory appear to have been removed or updated without their Free Memory function too.

After eliciting feedback and considering their options, Bjango went ahead and removed the feature. (Bjango advises users who want the feature to NOT UPGRADE their copies, and reminds Mac users with Time Machine how to downgrade to the old, “Free Memory”-enabled version if necessary.)

To rub salt on their wounds, negative reviews are now piling up for iStat in iTunes, of course, despite Bjango explaining Apple requested the removal in the app’s “What’s New in This Version” section.

What Apple’s rationale may be (if Phil Schiller deigns anyone with another email) is unknown.

[Thanks Scott for the tip!]
